Sunday’s BME bushwalk provides a taste of Blue Mountains canyoning, without resorting to abseiling. This medium grade 6km return walk start near Mt Tomah and descends via Camels Hump into delightful Rainbow Gully and thence down to Carmarthen Brook with its beautiful tall tree ferns, coachwoods and crystal clear cold pools. Much of the route is along unmaintained foot pads, indistinct in places, and once in Rainbow Gully and Carmarthen Book you can expect to get wet feet and legs. Volleys or sandshoes with good grip are recommended. The descent into Rainbow Gully involves one drop of about 1.5m which is best handled with rope assistance to avoid jumping (and possible ankle injury). The walk back is steep. Map Mt Wilson 1;25,000
