Archived trip from old website run by Richard Salmons

If we come out of lockdown, there will be great skiing to do on the Main Range. These peaks are higher than the ski resorts and get more snow, so the skiing lasts later in Spring. In September, there is full snow cover across the Main Range, plus better weather, so it is one of the best all-round times to ski. In October, the snow melts in the sun but there is still excellent cover where the slopes face south, including some classic steep runs.

I will put out a call for expressions of interest, and do a snow-camping trip as soon as lockdown lifts. This trip will be ideal for people who have done an alpine touring day trip already.

The general plan would be to catch Thredbo chairlift up to the top (saving ~500m of climbing), then ski a short distance with big packs to a convenient snow camping spot. There we can leave heavy items and ski about with just day packs, possibly exploring areas such as Mt Townsend, frozen Lake Albina, or the Kunama cirque. There are spectacular views all around, especially on spring days with blue skies.

Ski from Thredbo to Main Range campsite and return.
